AXIAL-FLOW

Axial flow turbines can allow extremely versatile design configurations from simple pit turbines through to “s” Type, vertical, horizontal and inclined shaft configurations. This makes Axial-Flow turbines the most useful of all turbine types especially on the lower head ranges from 1.5m of head up.

HOW IT WORKS

Water flows parallel to the turbine runner drive shaft ie flows along the same axis. Guide vanes are used to direct the water towards the turbine runner. Higher specific speeds are achievable with this turbine so direct coupling to a generator is sometimes possible.

CONTROL

Guide vanes and runners can be used to control the velocity of the water and the efficiency of the turbine. We supply the following variations:

  • Runner Regulation

  • Guide Vane Regulation

  • Double Regulation

Often we use double regulation which is a combination of both runner and guide vane regulation. A PLC works autonomously to achieve maximum efficiency and can shut down in event of overspeed or when a fault is found.

CONFIGURED DESIGNS

The configured designs of Axial-Flow turbines is also high variable and we can supply any of the following configurations:

  • Vertical Open Flume

  • Vertical Tubular

  • Inclined Tubular

  • Horizontal Tubular

  • “S” and “Z” type

  • Bulb

  • Siphon

  • Needles Eye

The configuration selected is determined by:

  • Site conditions

  • Available head

  • Flow

There is also the sometimes the option for the turbine to fit into existing civil structures.

Newmills have tailored their Axial-Flow turbine designs to fit in complex configurations, particularly within water treatment plants where the turbine has to control the entire flow to the treatment works.
