PELTON

With its recognisable runner bucket design the Newmills Pelton turbine is the turbine of choice when head is not a limiting factor. Starting from 50m of head up to 1000m they can generate power up to 20 Mega Watts in any single unit.  Newmills pride themselves on their ability to design site specific installations for existing civil structures. Whether this be upgrading, replacing or power recovery units that generate power from water supply networks and raw water inlet pipe to water treatment plants.

We developed the first power recovery turbine unit around the Pelton type. The entire unit was installed in a building structure, this structure included the fully installed pre commissioned turbine and fully installed control system prior to delivery. This turbine design is very much a plug and play configurations, these are known as Hydropak units. The largest Hydropak unit we have built to date was 500 KW output.

HOW IT WORKS

Pelton turbines are impulse turbines. They generate electricity by a large head of water providing high hydrostatic pressure, the water then passes through a nozzle further increasing its pressure, this nozzle is directed at the turbines runner buckets providing a turning force for the generator. Since the driving force of the turbine is coming from the high pressure nozzle and not just the gravitational force produced by the water Pelton turbines can be mounted horizontally or vertically. The high specific speed of the turbine allows the Pelton to be coupled directly onto a generator.

CONFIGURATIONS

Newmills can provide single, twin and three jet pelton turbines in horizontal shaft configurations or multiple jet machines up to 6 jets being available in a vertical shaft configuration.

INSTALLATION

The turbine is mounted on a rigid bedplate making for quick and easy installation on site. All that is required on site is a flat foundation, supply pipe and tail-water pipe.
